The cold, hard reality of freedom is that it is not free. Many of us go about our lives everyday without the knowledge or recognition of the sacrifice that millions of individuals in the military, and their families, have given in order for us to live in the land of the free. There is a reason why we are called The Home of the Brave. It isn't due to our brave politicians or workers but the sacrifice of brave men and women who help protect our land, our culture, our freedom and our future.
These men and women go to war. They are separated for long periods of time from their families, starting with the training and continuing into deployment. Deployment in other lands, far away, often war zones, or zones of extreme danger that need our soldiers to protect the weak and ensure the protection of basic human rights. Many of them are wounded, and a great deal of the wounded will never recover. I'm not talking about 'simply' gun shots - don't take me wrong, no wound is 'simple' - but also the loss of limbs, and the suffering of trauma, such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PSTD), that cannot be seen. Wounds that heal very slowly, or not at all. Then we also have those that give the greatest sacrifice of all, their lives. The life of a mother, father, brother, sister, son, daughter, cousin, niece, nephew, grandparent, friend... leaving a hole in the heart and lives of those who loved them and were waiting on their return.
When our troops return home they often feel displaced, carry a sense of loss, are traumatized, some are wounded, others disabled, and others don't make it home. Starting back into what we consider being a normal life is harsh and 'normal' no longer exists. Leaving the house is for some impossible, be it due to physical disabilities or mental struggles. Life after war is different than it was before they served and the feeling of being abandoned is real.
It is a terribly sad, although necessary, sacrifice that deserves recognition, and as such, I would like to say, to every member of the military that is serving or has served, and their spouses,
